Unchained Melody by Gareth Gates (CD, 2002)

Unchained Melody is the debut single by Gareth Gates, released in March 2002 on S Records/BMG. Gates finished runner-up on the inaugural series of Pop Idol but beat winner Will Young to number one with this release — it sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week and became one of the fastest-selling debut singles in UK chart history.

The track is a cover of the classic 1955 ballad, originally written by Alex North and Hy Zaret and made famous by The Righteous Brothers. Gates's version, produced with a contemporary pop arrangement, became the defining moment of the early 2000s TV talent show era.

Gareth Gates went on to release further top-ten singles and a platinum debut album, What My Heart Wants to Say (2002), cementing his place as one of the most commercially successful Pop Idol alumni.
