North to Alaska (1960) DVD [U]
North to Alaska is a rollicking, good-natured comedy western from 1960, directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne at his most relaxed and charismatic. It is one of the Duke's most purely enjoyable films - broad, boisterous, and enormous fun.
Set during the Alaskan gold rush, the film follows Sam McCord and his partner George Pratt, who strike it rich in the wilderness. George sends Sam to Seattle to fetch his fiancee, but she has married someone else - so Sam returns instead with Michelle, a French entertainer played by the luminous Capucine, and complications inevitably follow. Stewart Granger and Fabian round out the cast in a film that never takes itself too seriously and is all the better for it.
The title song, performed by Johnny Horton, became a number one hit in its own right. A warm, unpretentious, and thoroughly entertaining piece of early 1960s Hollywood cinema.
