Free Money — Trash to Cash 💰
Free Money — Trash to Cash 💰
Books, CDs, DVDs, Computer Games & Vinyl LPs
This category is called media.
We recycle everything — aluminium to zinc, furniture, clothes, jewellery, paper, wooden pallets. Cash is just another material we process.
We've found that VHS tapes, magazines, PC CD games, and cassette tapes have no resale value and should go straight to recycling.
8-track tapes are the exception — they carry quirky collector value on eBay, at auctions, and car boot sales.
Magazines, cardboard, and paper have scrap value, but in the UK you need a 500 kg baler. Not a home operation.
What's the Money Like? 💷
- £5 from 15 books, CDs, DVDs or games — with minimal effort
- £4–£100 for a single vinyl LP
- £4 for a vintage book; £8–£1,000 for a genuine antique
The longer you're willing to wait and advertise, the more each item is worth. Our system is built on the opposite — fast volume, fast cash.
The Conveyor Belt System ⚙️
Given 5,000 items, we sell 20% within 8 hours to wholesale buyers. The rest follows through progressively higher-value channels.
Our formula: get quick money for good products without having to sell them yourself. The wholesalers do the work. We get paid first.
Step 1 — Source Job Lots for Next to Nothing
Facebook Marketplace, eBay, classified ads, estate sales, auctions, freebies. Target: 5p per item or less. Ideal: nothing.
Step 2 — Wholesale Scan (Pass 1, 2, 3...)
There are 4+ high-volume buyers in the UK. Each wants different titles. Run your full pile through each one in turn:
- We Buy Books — generally the best-priced
- World of Books — sell your unwanted books for cash
- Music Magpie
- CeX
Each company will cherry-pick what they want. Do a second and third pass with the others. Watch for 10–15% promo codes on your first submission — they're offered regularly.
Most platforms have a £5 ceiling per item. Anything above that value should be pulled out and sold individually.
Step 3 — Scan Smart, Not Slow
Never type barcodes one at a time. Use a barcode scanner or wand, save everything to a document, then batch-paste 10–25 ISBNs at a time into each platform.
ISBN Quick Reference
- Post-1980: barcode on back cover — scan it
- 1969–1980: 10-digit ISBN (English titles start with 0 or 1; add a leading zero if you only have 9 digits)
- Pre-1969 / pre-decimalisation: no barcode — type manually or skip unless clearly antique
Step 4 — Work the Leftovers
After wholesale, roughly 80% of your pile remains. You're already in profit. Now choose:
- Car boot sale — shift bulk fast
- Facebook Marketplace — job lots or individual items
- Vinted — buyer pays postage; list at your target price and walk away
- eBay — best for individual items with strong demand
- Your online store — builds a permanent, searchable database of stock
- Auction house — ideal for antique books; no photography or descriptions required
Know Your Book Categories 📚
- Modern: 0–50 years old — wholesale fodder
- Vintage: 50–100 years old — worth £4+ individually; always check before bundling
- Antique: 100+ years old — pull these from the pile; auction or list individually; values range from £8 to £1,000+
Don't dismiss a tatty old book. Pub owners, interior decorators, and serious collectors actively seek antique volumes for display and reading. A scruffy 1780s hardback can be worth more than a pristine modern bestseller.
Build a Database, Not Just a Pile
Every item you scan — sold or unsold — goes into your store database. Unsold stock stays listed. You can re-test it across new platforms, print pick lists, or simply wait for the right buyer.
The worst outcome: a free trip to the tip. The best outcome: a sale you forgot you had listed.
Does This Work Outside the UK? 🌍
Yes. The same principles apply in Ireland, Australia, Canada, the US, South Africa, and New Zealand. The wholesale buyer names differ by country — research local equivalents. The conveyor belt logic is universal.
