Howard Hawks' Hatari! is a sun-drenched adventure classic starring John Wayne at his most relaxed and charismatic — a big, warm, sprawling film set against the breathtaking landscapes of Tanganyika (now Tanzania).

Wayne plays Sean Mercer, the leader of a team of professional game hunters who capture wild animals alive for zoos around the world. It's a film less concerned with plot than with atmosphere — the camaraderie of the camp, the thrill of the chase, and the gentle romance that develops between Mercer and a wildlife photographer played by Elsa Martinelli. Red Buttons and Hardy Krüger round out a wonderfully likeable ensemble.

The film is perhaps best remembered for Henry Mancini's iconic score, including the irresistible Baby Elephant Walk — one of the most joyful pieces of music ever written for cinema.
